The latest offering on Netflix running for 2 hours and 5 minutes. Ordained to be a comedy however, Toaster appears to be a medley of scripts strung together to complete the ultimately movie.
It starts out promisingly about a young couple living on rent. The husband, Ramakant (Rajkumar Rao) who is an incurable miser whose reason of living amongst a society of elders is low rent and free buffet breakfast at landlady’s house every morning and sucking upto the old hag to lower rent further. This miser is so persistent with the telecom company that he recovers a small charge of Rs 6 from them, and his wife Shilpa (Saniya Malhotra) sweet and homely with a black belt to boot.
It all starts with Ramakant’s act of extreme stinginess, when a wedding is cancelled, he takes extreme measures to retrieve the toaster he reluctantly gifted. Toaster moves forward from here and meanders within various subplots, theft, sex tapes, a pervert old hag and murders then finally the happy ending when we feel that all’s well and that our hero has learnt his lessons in frugality and promises thus to his good wife but no he resorts to one last act of parsimony by taking his wife for langar in a Gurudwara on their anniversary. The phrase ‘Kanjoos makhichoos’ was invented for such people.
There are no songs or dance apart from the you are my bunny hideous routine by Archana Puran Singh. Rajkummar Rao delivers a hamful comic timing which only he can carryout. His portrayal of a middle-class miser though relatable produces few laughs however he has tried hard to please that’s half a star for him. Saniya Malhotra appears fresh, peppy, sincere and pleasing to the eyes. Archana Puran Singh shown as a lustful witch who appears horrific (see her without makeup at your own risk).
I will end with a saying which is also my verdict for this flick : Nothing is more expensive than missed opportunity that starts strong but falters due to weak writing. Running time 126 minutes
